NATIONAL CITY, CA—A fiery freeway pileup in National City on Monday evening injured at least nine people, including a child and four adults who were burned, authorities said.
The crash happened a little before 7 p.m. on northbound Interstate 5 near the Civic Center Drive and Harbor Drive exit, according to National City Battalion Chief Mark Beveridge.
When firefighters arrived on scene, three vehicles were engulfed in flames, Beveridge told OnScene TV. Footage from the scene showed at least two sedans, a small SUV and a pickup were involved in the pileup.
Nine people were injured, including seven who suffered what Beveridge described as major injuries. Five of those people were burned, including one child whose age Beveridge did not know or did not disclose.
Medics took the child to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, while the four adults who were burned were taken to the UC San Diego Medical Center burn unit, Beveridge said. It was unclear how severe the burn injuries and other wounds were.
The crash closed all northbound I-5 lanes for about 30 minutes. All lanes were reopened by about 9:20 p.m.
Heavy traffic after the crash made it difficult for firefighters and paramedics to reach the scene, Beveridge said. Chula Vista firefighters helped National City crews respond.
