OR Firefighter Suffers Heat-Related Injuries in Barn Fire

July 29, 2019
The barn had collapsed by the time Tualatin Valley crews arrived Sunday, and firefighters needed to shuttle water to the scene because the rural area lacked hydrants.

A firefighter is expected to recover after being taken to a hospital suffering from heat-related issues from a flame-engulfed barn west of Wilsonville on Sunday, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue said.

Firefighters received multiple calls around 2 p.m. regarding a fully engulfed barn that was beginning to collapse at a farm on Wilsonville Road and near Edmiston Road, according to a department news release.

When the fire crew from Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue and the Lake Oswego Fire Department arrived, they found the barn collapsed and fully engulfed in flames, the department said. Several structures were nearby, but did not catch fire.

It took about 45 minutes to put out the fire using resources on the ground and with aerial operations, the department said. Firefighters said it was challenging to extinguish because the barn’s hay fueled the fire.

Firefighters also regularly rotated to prevent overheating from warm temperatures, the department said.

Difficulties from the rural location and lack of fire hydrants meant water had to be shuttled to the scene by water tenders, the department said. Wilsonville Road was temporarily closed because of it.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
