An Illinois firefighter was injured when a wall collapsed on him while battling an apartment blaze Monday.
Around 18 fire departments responded to the fire, which broke out at about 1:15 p.m., the Spring Valley Fire Department stated in an online update. Crews began attacking the flames from inside the building, but that was unsuccessful because of fire conditions and the building's integrity, which began deteriorating and led to the roof collapsing.
Along with the roof, the building's east wall fell. That collapse hurt a Spring Valley firefighter, injuring his arm, the fire department stated. The firefighter was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.
It took firefighters around six hours to finally extinguish the blaze, the department added.
