MA Medical Alarm Becomes Three-Alarm House Fire

A police officer dispatched to a medical alarm activation found a Sherborn home on fire.

SHERBORN – More than 50 firefighters from 10 communities fought a three-alarm fire at a Town Lyne Road home on Friday that sent two people to the hospital, fire officials said.

Interim Fire Chief Zack Ward said the two-and-a-half story home at 10 Towne Lyne Road is a total loss.

The police and an ambulance initially went to the home at 7:11 a.m. for a report of a medical emergency. When the police officer arrived, he discovered the house was on fire and immediately called the fire department, Ward said

"Where the fire occurred... we have to drive through both Millis and Holliston to get there," said Ward. "It's very far from the town of Sherborn, although it's technically in Sherborn."

Firefighters had a significant problem: the water supply – the closest hydrant was more than a half mile away, the chief said. When firefighters arrived, about half of the house was already engulfed in flames.

"The firefighters made an aggressive interior attack to try to save the house, but it was deemed too dangerous and we pulled them out," Ward said.

A resident was taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries, Ward said. One firefighter also went to a hospital with a minor burn. It appears only one person was home at the time of the fire.

The fire eventually went to three alarms and Sherborn was joined at the scene by Ashland, Holliston, Framingham, Natick, Norfolk, Millis, Medway and Dover, as well as the Massachusetts Fire Marshal's Rehabilitation Team and the District 14 fire investigation team, Ward said. Firefighters remained on scene for several hours.

The cause and origin of the fire are not known, he said. The fire does not appear to be suspicious.

The contemporary-style home was built in 1986 and is assessed at $855,200, according to town property records.
