Forty apartments were damaged, but no one was injured in a large apartment complex fire overnight fire in Gloucester Township.

The fire broke out around midnight in Buttonwood Village along South Blackhorse Pike, Gloucester Township police said.

Firefighters battled frigid conditions in the Blackwood section of town for several hours before bringing the blaze under control, 6abc.com reported.

The Union Fire Company of Deptford, which assisted, said the fire grew to three alarms and that two buildings were burned in the blaze.

Firefighters, police officers and even residents helped ensure everyone got out of the apartments safely, 6abc.com said.

The Red Cross of New Jersey said it provided 29 people in 20 families with temporary lodging as well as food and clothing.

Black Horse Pike was closed between Davistown Road and Church Street for several hours before re-opening at around 5:30 a.m, Gloucester Township police said in an alert.

A police spokesman couldn’t immediately be reached for more information.
