QUINCY, MA—A Monday morning fire forced four people out of their homes at an apartment building at 24 Brook Road in Quincy, one of whom was rescued by firefighters.
Quincy fire Deputy Chief Gary Smyth said that firefighters responding to the scene rescued a man from the second floor of the building using a ground ladder. He was treated on scene for minor injuries.
One firefighter sustained a minor back injury during the rescue and a woman who lived at the building was brought to an area-hospital with minor injuries. A Brewster EMS worker on scene would not say where she was brought.
The fire was called in just before 9 a.m.
Smyth said that he estimated that the single-alarm fire caused more than $100,000 in damage to the two-floor building. Smyth said the building had at least four apartment units in it and that the fire began in the kitchen in the back of one of the apartments on the first floor. The fire started to expand to the second floor, before firefighters put it out, Smyth said.
"Firefighters were aggressive in stopping the spread of the fire," Smyth said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The fire drew at least six fire engines including, Ladder 2, a two-driver tiller truck stationed at the Wollaston firehouse on Beale Street. The truck has two chassis and can pivot in the first third of the rig, like a tractor trailer, to make it more nimble. Monday marked the first time the new truck was deployed to an active fire.
The 57.5-foot truck has a 101-foot ladder than can go up about seven stories, depending on the circumstances. The truck was purchased by the city to help firefighters navigate an ever-more congested Quincy, as new development increases.
