A fire captain and two firefighters were taken to a hospital Tuesday after they were injured fighting a blaze at a four-story building in Newark, authorities said.
Three families, including five adults and six children, lost their homes in the fire and have been relocated, according to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose.
City firefighters responded about 3:30 p.m. to fire in a mixed-use building in the 300 block of South Orange Avenue, Ambrose said.
When firefighters arrived, they discovered the fire and smoke pouring from the second, third and fourth floors. The flames spread to a nearby building, Ambrose said.
“One fire captain and one firefighter were evaluated at the scene for elevated heart rates and blood pressure issues and another firefighter was evaluated for an injury to his elbow,” Ambrose said in an email.
The three were taken to University Hospital in Newark. No other injuries were reported.
The fire was under control about 4:20 p.m. and the cause remains under investigation.
