A St. Paul firefighter was injured in an early morning blaze that damaged four garages and two homes on St. Paul’s North End.

Firefighters were called to the 1500 block of Cumberland Street around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses said they heard explosions, which likely were caused by aerosol cans or propane tanks in the garages, fire department spokesman Roy Mokosso said.

The neighborhood is made up of single-family homes with detached garages.

Firefighters were on scene for over three hours and one was taken to the hospital for evaluation. No property damage estimate or cause was available. The fire remains under investigation.

“The extent of the fire makes the investigation process difficult,” Mokosso said. “Investigators will work to definitively identify both the point of origin and ignition source before ruling out arson.”
