Watch NJ Firefighters Battle 6-Alarm Residential Blaze

The fire that spread to six houses in a Paterson neighborhood displaced nearly 60 people, and firefighters from nine departments were needed to extinguish the blaze.

Nearly 60 people were displaced after a six-alarm fire tore through a Paterson neighborhood on Saturday night.

The blaze was reported around 8:40 p.m. on Beech Street and spread to six houses, according to Paterson Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale.

No injuries were reported.

Arriving firefighters found buildings engulfed in flames. Firefighters from several neighboring communities, including Clifton, Haledon, Hawthorne, Fair Lawn, Little Falls, Passaic, Totowa and Woodland Park responded to help battle the inferno.

The fire was brought under control around 11 p.m., but crews remained on scene for hours dousing hotspots.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross is helping 59 displaced people from 14 families with emergency assistance, including temporary housing, food and clothing, the agency reported.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said Speziale, who praised Paterson Fire Department Chief Brian McDermott and his team. “They do a tremendous job."
