Video: Philly FF Escapes Third-Story Window in 3-Alarm Blaze

More than 150 Philadelphia firefighters battled a massive residential blaze that injured a firefighter and was "really a four-alarm equivalent fire because of the heat," said one official.

A Philadelphia firefighter was injured during a massive three-alarm residential blaze Thursday that one official said was "really a four-alarm equivalent fire because of the heat."

The fire broke out shortly before 3:30 p.m. in the city's Somerton neighborhood, KYW-TV reports. More than 150 firefighters responded to the call, and the flames ripped through three residential buildings.

“They were able to stop this fire and essentially kept it from running through this entire row of buildings,” Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel told KYW.

Video from the scene shows one firefighter bailing out of a building's third story to escape flames. He is seen rolling out the window and descending down a ladder.

One firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital in stable condition, according to KYW. It's not clear if the injured firefighter also was the firefighter who escaped the third-story window.

Wind and heat created challenges for the firefighters, helping the flames spread to other buildings.

“It’s really a four-alarm equivalent fire because of the heat,” Thiel told KYW.

Crews were able to control the fire by 5:45 p.m. The cause of the blaze is not known.
