A firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling a four-alarm blaze that broke out at a Goodwill store Sunday.
Colorado Springs crews responded to a fire at the store near Jet Wing Drive and Hancock Expressway shortly after 5 p.m., KKTV-TV reports. The call initially was a two-alarm fire, but it was elevated briefly to a four-alarm blaze.
"We initially got the call of just an outside fire," Capt. Mike Smaldino told KKTV. "We had one engine that came over here and when they got here they reported heavy fire in the area."
Eighty firefighters in 20 apparatus were at the scene, and crews worked to put out the flames on the ground and from above, according to the fire department. Strong winds and at least 50 pallets of donated goods around the back of the store where the blaze started presented challenges for firefighters, and they were able to put out the fire before 8:30 p.m.
Crews safely evacuated the store and were able to keep the fire from spreading to other nearby buildings. The blaze was contained to the outside of the buildings, but the store's interior suffered some smoke damage.
A firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the department. Details concerning how the firefighter was hurt and the extent of the injuries were not released.
