To stop two attacking dogs at a fire scene Thursday, two Washington, D.C., firefighters threw their bodies on the animals, injuring one of the first responders.

The incident happened while D.C. Fire and EMS crews were working a fire in the 4000 block of South Capitol Street SE, the department stated in an online update. That's when two dogs began attacking civilians outside.

Two firefighters threw themselves on top of the canines in an effort to prevent further attacks. The firefighters were able to hold down the animals until police arrived, according to the department.

One firefighter and a civilian suffered dog bite injuries from the incident. They were taken to the hospital, but their injuries were not considered serious, the department said.

The dogs are being quarantined while the Human Rescue Alliance investigates the incident, the department added.
