A motor home erupted in flames Wednesday in Escondido, sending thick black smoke billowing into the air as the blaze threatened nearby fuel storage tanks, authorities said.
The fire was reported a few minutes before 1 p.m. at Shuster Oil on West Third Avenue between South Spruce and South Quince streets, according to Escondido fire Battalion Chief Andre Paredes.
Shuster Oil is a commercial and industrial gas station.
Because of the thick black smoke, firefighters responding to the blaze requested additional crews both while en route and upon arrival, where they found the motor home fully engulfed in flames near the industrial storage tanks, according to a statement from Paredes.
One of the tanks was blistered by the fire, but no fuel leaked, according to Paredes. Firefighters needed about 25 minutes to control the fire, which destroyed the motor home.
No injuries were reported.
Nine engines and three trucks responded to the blaze, as well as a hazardous incident response team from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, as well as city and county environmental health personnel.
Paredes said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
