An off-duty Texas firefighter was seriously injured rescuing someone trapped in a burning residence Tuesday.

Granite Shoals firefighter/EMT Dustin Short saved a person inside a burning structure in Kingsland, KXAN-TV reports. Because he didn't have any firefighting gear, he was exposed to hot gases, which caused severe lung injuries, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the firefighter.

“At this time, Firefighter Short is being mechanically ventilated while his lung injuries are treated,” the department said in a statement, according to KXAN. “He remains in serious but stable condition at a local trauma center. The family of Firefighter Short is currently asking for privacy as they adjust to the severity of these circumstances.”

As of Wednesday morning, the GoFundMe page for Short, an eight-year veteran of the department, has raised more than $2,000 of its $5,000 goal.
