MA Crews Save Unconscious Man from Burning Hotel Room

Bridgewater firefighters had to force their way into an unconscious man's burning hotel room, and they were able to rescue him and prevent the flames from spreading.

An unconscious man was rescued from a burning hotel room in Bridgewater early Thursday morning, officials said.

Firefighters responded shortly after midnight to a report of a fire at the Marriott Residence Inn Boston Bridgewater, located at 2020 Pleasant St., according to a statement from the city’s fire department.

“Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke on the second floor of the hotel,” the statement said. “Firefighters had to force entry into one of the rooms, where they found a fire in the kitchen area and a man that was unconscious lying in a bed.”

The unconscious man was taken out of the hotel and given medical care in an ambulance as the blaze was quickly extinguished, according to officials.

The 42-year-old man, who is from Elk Grove, CA, was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is in stable condition and expected to survive, authorities said.

Bridgewater Fire Chief Thomas D. Levy noted the responding firefighters saved the man’s life.

“This is a large building with many people inside. Our firefighters did a great job of locating the source of the fire and forcing entry into the room in order to get to the man inside,” Levy said in a statement. “Thankfully, we were able to get to him in time and prevent the fire from spreading further.”

Roughly 100 people in total were evacuated from the hotel. No one besides the California man was injured, though, according to the Bridgewater Fire Department.

Although the fire was contained to the man’s room, six or seven rooms sustained smoke and water damage, the department said.

The fire is not suspicious, according to official, but the cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
