PITTSBURG, CA—Firefighters rescued a person from a blaze that ripped through a house early Tuesday, a fire official said.
Two people initially were reported to be inside the home in the 3700 block of Crestview Drive when Contra Costa County Fire Protection District crews were called there at about 2:45 a.m., fire spokesman Steve Hill said. Firefighters later found the second resident in a location away from the blaze.
Workers rescued one person, who was treated at the scene. That person declined further medical treatment, Hill said.
The call initially came in as a fire in the garage, and people calling 9-1-1 reported that they were banging on the door of the house with no response, Hill said. After those reports, fire crews forced their way inside.
Firefighters cut a hole in the roof after getting inside to air out smoke and prevent any explosions. They also cut off the garage door to get to the blaze there and kept it from spreading to the attic, Hill said.
Fire investigators have not yet determined what started the fire, but they suspect that carelessly discarded smoking materials may have played a part, Hill said. The home did not have any smoke detectors in it, he said.
