Watch NJ Firefighters Tackle 4-Alarm Steel Plant Blaze
Arson investigators are looking into a four-alarm fire that tore through a steel processing plant in Kenilworth overnight, authorities said.
The fire occurred at Blue Blade Steel in Kenilworth, a plant that tempers and hardens a variety of steel for the manufacturer of flat wire and other products, according to the company’s website.
Kenilworth police and firefighters initially responded to the blaze late Saturday, Kenilworth Police Chief John Zimmerman said.
However, the fire reached four alarms as it burned into the early morning hours on Sunday, with departments from Linden, Elizabeth, Cranford, Union, Springfield, and Hillside providing aid, Zimmerman said.
No injuries were reported, but the fire caused what Zimmerman said was “significant damage” to the building.
Zimmerman said the Union County Arson Task Force was called to the scene, along with the county sheriff’s department. A spokesman for the county, Sebastian D’Elia, declined to provide additional details.
“There’s no further comment while an investigation is ongoing,” D’Elia said in a text.
Blue Blade’s phone was out of service on Sunday, and company officials could not be reached.
