During the fire, a firefighter suffered a non-life threatening injury, the department stated. According to WEHT-TV, the firefighter injured a shoulder and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Owensboro Fire Chief James Howard credits a fire wall with possibly limiting of the damage.

“Half of the building, it looks like, maybe, saved by a firewall, should not have significant smoke or fire damage from what we can tell," Howard told WEHT. "So, we’re mainly focused on the apartments on the west end of the building. I’d say at least four of those families are going to have significant fire, smoke, or water damage to their apartment."
