At least two people were killed and several others were injured after a massive explosion partially destroyed a building in central Madrid, local media reported Wednesday.
Shocking videos posted on social media showed streets covered in rubble with a cloud of smoke coming out of the building in the Spanish capital.
The cause of the explosion and the extent of the damage were not immediately known, but neighbors told El País they smelled gas in the area hours before the blast.
Spanish public broadcaster TVE said emergency workers helped evacuate residents from a neighboring nursing home and were trying to find additional victims in the rubble. A neighboring school was reportedly closed at the time of the incident.
In a brief message posted on Twitter, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called the blast “a terrible explosion” and said his government was closely monitoring the situation.
Local authorities urged people to avoid the area so emergency vehicles and personnel can do their work.
This is a developing story.
