Intense flames spread through a two-story rowhouse in the Petworth neighborhood, and smoke detectors potentially could have prevented the loss of life, according to D.C. Fire and EMS officials.

A D.C. Fire and EMS firefighter was injured battling a house fire that killed two people early Thursday.

The fire broke out shortly before 3 a.m. at a two-story rowhouse in the Petworth neighborhood, WRC-TV reports. Intense flames partially collapsed the home's back porch and began spreading to two nearby homes before firefighters were able to contain them.

Two people were discovered during a search of the home, and they were rushed to the hospital, where they died from their injuries. A firefighter also was taken to the hospital with a minor injury.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials told WRC that the home had no smoke detectors, which could've potentially prevented the loss of life.
