Feb. 12—SOUTH DENNIS, MA — No injuries were reported in a stump dump fire on Thursday

Dennis fire officials responded to the fire at S&E Exco, located at 200 Great Western Road, the Dennis Fire Department said in a statement. When firefighters arrived, they found an 80 by 100-foot pile of stumps on fire.

S&E Exco is a scrap metal purchaser and wood waste recycler, transfer station and landscape supply facility, according to the company's website.

An excavator from the company was used to help pull the pile apart and extinguish the fire.

The dry, winter air along with a stiff breeze enhances spontaneous combustion of these types of piles, the department said in the statement. Water sprinklers installed by the company froze and could not be used to extinguish the fire.
