Feb. 18, 2021
A home security captured a large gas explosion near Ames, and firefighters worked for hours to control a fire ignited by the blast.

An Oklahoma natural gas explosion lit up the morning sky early Thursday.

The incident happened shortly before 5:30 a.m. about a mile east and 4 miles south of Ames, a town just south Enid, KWTV-TV reports. Ames Fire Chief Mike Willey saidl that a 6- to 8-inch gas line with around 600 to 800 pounds of pressure ruptured, but he didn't give details about how the break occurred.

“There was no threat to people or private property,” he told The Associated Press. “The closest house is about a quarter mile away.”

Gas company workers were able to shut off the line and decrease the crews. Firefighters were then able to get the fire from the explosion under control just after 9 a.m.

No injuries were reported in the incident. A home security camera captured the explosion, which can be seen lighting up the horizon.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
