Feb. 25, 2021
Three Somerville firefighters were injured when concrete collapsed on them while battling flames from four burning vehicles on the fourth floor of a parking structure.

Three Massachusetts firefighters caught under a collapsing concrete were among five injured battling a parking garage fire early Wednesday.

The fire broke out just before 2:30 a.m. at a Somerville parking structure, WHDH-TV reports. When crews reached the scene, they found four vehicles burning on the garage's fourth, and flames spread to a space between the structure and an apartment building.

“Heat from the burning vehicles also resulted in a portion of concrete collapsing,” Somerville Fire Chief Charles Breen told WFXT-TV. “Three firefighters were injured by the falling section of concrete.”

Two other firefighters also suffered minor injuries in the fire. No details were released about the conditions of the injured firefighters.

The fire destroyed four vehicles and damaged a fifth. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
