IL Firefighter Injured after Box of Batteries Explodes in Fire

An Illinois firefighter was injured when a box of batteries exploded while he was battling a residential fire Wednesday.

The fire broke out just before 6:30 p.m. at a home in Bonnie, WMCL-AM reports. Ammunition inside the house was going off as crews from Waltonville, Woodlawn, Sesser and Mount Vernon battled the flames.

During the call, a firefighter was walking by a plastic box of batteries when it exploded. The blast knocked the firefighter to the ground and caused him temporary hearing damage, according to WMCL.

Firefighters put out the fire, which destroyed the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
