Two Killed, Four Injured in Chicago House Fire

A young girl was among two people killed and four others were injured by a house fire Sunday morning in Gresham on Chicago's South Side.

Chicago fire officials early Sunday said two people were killed and four others were injured in a house fire in the South Side neighborhood of Gresham.

One of the two people who died was a young girl, and a representative of the fire department said they believe she was 12. The other person who died was a woman in her 30s, according to the department. The Cook County medical examiner’s office had not yet released their names Sunday morning.

Four adults — two men and two women — were injured and they were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and “are expected to recover,” the agency said in a social media post. It wasn’t immediately clear what types of injuries they had suffered and more specific condition information was not released.

It is not known how the fire in the 8300 block of South Hermitage Avenue began and fire inspectors were working to determine its cause.

Firefighters who responded did not hear noise from smoke alarms upon arrival and it’s believed there were no working smoke detectors in the home, according to the agency.

The call also prompted an EMS Plan 1, which launches at least five ambulances. The two people who died and who earlier had been listed by the fire department as “extremely critical,” were rushed to OSF Healthcare Little Company of Mary Medical Center.
