FDNY Reminds Public About Hydrant Parking

March 2, 2021
The FDNY shared images on social media of vehicles blocking fire hydrants in an effort to remind the public that it can threaten both lives and property.

The FDNY took to social media to remind the public not to park in front of fire hydrants after crews encountered several such instances in recent weeks.

Firefighters operating at an all-hands residential fire in Brooklyn on Sunday encountered a vehicle parked on a hydrant, which caused a delay in setting up water supply to extinguish the fire. The FDNY said that thankfully there were no injuries.

"It is illegal to park within 15 feet of either side of a fire hydrant," the department said in a post that appeared on both Facebook and Twitter and showed multiple vehicles committing a violation that normally results in a $115 fine.

Sometimes the results can be a bit more severe than just the fine. There have been several instances previously published on Firehouse.com showing how FDNY crews were forced to break out the windows of vehicles blocking hydrants at fire scenes, one from August 2020 and another from February of this year.
