Molasses Rail Car Explodes, Damages MN Railroad Building

No one was injured after a rail car exploded in Cannon Falls, spewing molasses and causing damage to a Progressive Rail facility.

Minnesota firefighters and other first responders responded to an exploding rail car Tuesday that damaged a building and spewed molasses.

The explosion happened shortly after 7 a.m. at the Progressive Rail facility in Cannon Falls, according to an online update by the city's police department. The rail car had been carrying molasses, and it doesn't appear that any hazardous substances were involved in the blast.

"The explosion caused significant structural damage to a building at the Progressive Rail facility, but there were no injuries to persons," the department stated.

The Cannon Falls Fire Department and Cannon Falls Ambulance were among the agencies who were called in to handle the incident. The Minnesota Duty Officer is investigating the cause of the explosion.
