MA Firefighter Seriously Injured Battling Residential Fire

The two-alarm fire broke out in a two-family home in Springfield, starting on the second floor and spreading quickly to the attic and roof.

SPRINGFIELD, MAA house fire late Thursday in the Liberty Heights neighborhood caused $100,000 damage to a two-family home and left five residents in need of shelter, a fire official said.

One firefighter was injured in the fire at 284 Lexington St., said Capt. Drew Piemonte, aide to Fire Commissioner Bernard J. Calvi. The firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries that were described as serious but not life-threatening, Piemonte said.

Update 284 Lexington St. Fire has been extinguished. 5 tenants have been displaced they are being assisted by Red Cross. One firefighter was transported to hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The fire was reported at about 10:30 p.m. It began in the second-floor rear and spread quickly to the attic and roof before it could be extinguished, he said.

The Western Massachusetts chapter of the American Red Cross were called in to assist the residents find temporary shelter.

The dwelling, a 2-1/2 story wood frame, was constructed in 1926, according to city records. The property has a total assessment of $183,000.
