NY Firefighter Injured by Debris During Residential Fire

April 13, 2021
Utica firefighters encountered flames shooting through several first-floor windows when they first arrived at the scene of a house fire that displaced 12.

A Utica firefighter was injured Tuesday while battling a blaze in Cornhill that displaced 12 people, city fire officials said.

Emergency crews responded at 1:40 p.m. to 1125 Neilson St., where they were met with flames shooting out of several windows on the first floor of the two-story wooden structure, officials said.

Occupants reported that a 14-year-old boy was unaccounted for, so crews immediately searched the house while others battled the flames. One firefighter suffered a hand injury due to falling debris.

It eventually was learned the boy was at school, officials said.

The displaced occupants who lived in the two-family dwelling were assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Utica police, National Grid and the Mohawk Valley Water Authority also responded.
