April 26, 2021
More than 50 firefighters from eight departments tackled a massive fire at the Hyannis Harbor Hotel that destroyed the roof over three units.

Multiple Cape fire departments responded to the scene of a five-alarm fire at the Hyannis Harbor Hotel on Sunday afternoon.

The Hyannis Fire Department received a call regarding the fire at the hotel at 213 Ocean St. at 2:46 p.m., Hyannis fire Chief Peter Burke said.

The fire, which was located between the walls in a room on the first floor, traveled to the second floor of the hotel and into the attic.

The fire quickly escalated to a five-alarm fire, Burke said. Outside, between 15 and 20 staffers were gathered while crews responded to the blaze.

"It's very sad, not only for the hotel, but for the workers," said Cathy Morelli, a bystander who came across the scene outside the hotel.

As of 4:45 p.m., crews on ladder trucks were still working to extinguish the fire, which had destroyed the roofing over three units on the second floor.

About 55 firefighters in total responded to the scene, Burke said. Fire department crews from Barnstable, West Barnstable, Yarmouth, Cotuit, Dennis, Mashpee, Sandwich and Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills responded to the fire Sunday afternoon.

No one was injured or required hospital transport due to the fire, Burke said.

Traffic was closed on South Street, Old Colony Road and a portion of Ocean Street in the area of the fire while crews responded.

Staff from the hotel would not comment on the fire Sunday. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Burke said.
