Three NY Firefighters Injured Battling House Fire

SYRACUSE, NY—Syracuse firefighters pulled a woman from a burning home on the city’s South Side near Interstate 81 this afternoon.

Firefighters rushed to 521 Garfield Avenue at 4:41 p.m. to find heavy smoke and fire in the attic of the 2 ½ story, wood-frame home, according to a Syracuse Fire Department news release this afternoon.

They entered the home and encountered tremendous heat and zero visibility while searching for the trapped woman, officials said.  After a few minutes, they found the woman, they said.

The woman was unconscious and immediately treated by firefighters and paramedics from AMR, officials said.  She was transported to Upstate University Hospital.  Her condition is not currently known.

Three firefighters were hurt while battling the blaze, officials said. All three were transported to hospitals with minor injuries.

It took crews nearly 30 minutes to extinguish the fire, officials said.

National Grid and the Syracuse Police Department also responded to the scene.  The American Red Cross will be assisting displaced residents with shelter and other needs. 

Members of the Fire Investigation Bureau are currently working to determine the origin and cause.
