A Turlock firefighter who suffered first-degree burns from radiant heat was also bitten while trying to rescue one of three dogs during the call.

A California firefighter was burned and bitten by a dog while responding to a grass fire Tuesday.

The fire broke out at a Turlock home just before 3 p.m., the fire department stated in an online update. Flames burned about 2 acres and extended to the residence.

Only three dogs were home at the time of the fire, and a firefighter was bitten while trying to rescue one of the canines, KXTV-TV reports. That same firefighter also suffered first-degree burns from radiant heat, and he was treated at the scene before returning to action.

Roughly 40 firefighters from six agencies helped to contain both the structure and grass fires, according to the department.

"The structure fire and grass fire were brought under control after an extensive period of time performing suppression activities," the department stated.
