Two children with life-threatening injuries were among those rescued as nearly every Mansfield firefighter was dispatched to a residential fire that also injured two first responders.

Five seriously injured people, including two children, were rescued from a house fire that injured two firefighters Monday.

The fire broke out just after 7:30 a.m. at a home in Mansfield, the Richland Source reports. The call had nearly every city firefighter dispatched to the scene, and Madison Township also assisted with the emergency.

Firefighters rescued four people who were unresponsive, while another victim pulled from the burning house was conscious. All those rescued were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Two firefighters also were injured battling the fire. No details were released concerning the extent of their injuries or their conditions.

Crews were able to keep flames from spreading to other structures, despite the closeness of homes in the neighborhood.

"I just can't say enough for our fire department," Mansfield Safety Service Director Lori Cope told the Source. "I'm their biggest fan."
