A Pennsylvania volunteer firefighter was rescued me fellow crew members after he partially fell through the first floor during a residential fire over the weekend.
The fire happened just before 2 a.m. Sunday at a single-story home in South Heidelberg Township, according to the Western Berks Fire Department. Because of a lack of hydrants in the area, tankers brought water to a nearby fill site, and crews used three hoselines to put out the flames.
During the call, a mayday was issued after a firefighter partially fell through the first floor and into the basement. Fellow firefighters were able to reach him and pull him out of the burning home.
"The guy next to me who was behind me when we went into the room saw that I fell," firefighter Nathan Griffith, 20, told WFMZ-TV. "He started communicating and asked me if I could get up. I couldn't. I initiated my mayday."
"Right after that, some other guys from the hallway came in and pulled me out of the hole," he added.
The firefighter was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, the department said. He was later released with minor injuries.
No other injuries were reported from the fire. Firefighters stayed at the scene until around 5:45 a.m. to put out hot spots and complete an overhaul, according to the department.
