Baltimore City firefighters responded early Thursday morning to a fire that damaged six buildings on the 1200 block of Battery Ave. and the 300 block of E. West Street in the Riverside neighborhood. As fire and smoke roared, occupants of the buildings were scattered outside not too far from the scene.

Firefighters arrived shortly after 6 a.m., said Blair Adams, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore City Fire Department. Upon arriving, they saw heavy fire and smoke coming out of six, three-story rowhomes. The crew called in additional units for support.

There are no reported injuries. When firefighters got to the scene, they entered the buildings to stifle the fire and check if anybody was still inside. All occupants of the homes managed to get out of the buildings before firefighters arrived, Adams said.

“[Firefighters] began interior operations to put the fire out but also to make sure there weren’t any additional occupants inside,” Adams said.

Firefighters placed the fire under control in just under an hour. The crew called neighborhood services to find temporary shelter for the displaced building occupants.

At this time, the cause of the fire and extent of the damage is unclear. Adams said this will be part of the subsequent investigation.
