Two NJ Firefighters Injured in 5-Alarm Residential Blaze

July 19, 2021
Crews from several neighboring departments worked for over three hours to put out a large fire that tore through three Kearny homes and injured an occupant.

A five-alarm fire that spread through three New Jersey homes sent an occupant and two firefighters to the hospital Sunday.

The blaze broke out at around 9 a.m. at a home in Kearny, The Observer reports. When crews reached the scene, they found that flames had already spread to nearby houses.

A fifth alarm eventually was raised, and off-duty firefighters were called in. Several neighboring departments—Harrison, Jersey City, North Hudson Regional, Bayonne, Hoboken, North Arlington and Belleville—helped battled the blaze and had it under control just after 12:15 p.m.

A Kearny firefighter and a Jersey City firefighter were injured during the call. They both were taken to the hospital, and the Kearny firefighter was later released.

"The status of the Jersey City member is unknown at this time," Kearny Fire Chief Joseph A. Mastandrea told The Observer.

The injured occupant was taken to the Burn Center at Saint Barnabas in Livingston. No details were release about the patient's condition.

Three pets died in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
