Firefighters Put Out 4-Alarm Blaze that Gutted PA Food Warehouse

Aug. 5, 2021
The massive fire engulfed the Weaver Nut Company warehouse in Lancaster County, imploding the building's roof and sending a plume of smoke with possibly hazardous flames into the air.

Firefighters early Thursday morning were able to put out a four-alarm fire that engulfed a Lancaster County food distribution warehouse the previous day, dispatchers said.

County dispatch said the blaze at the Weaver Nut Company Inc. warehouse off Route 322 in Clay Township was extinguished overnight Thursday. Fire crews left the scene around 3:30 a.m.

Firefighters were first called to the scene around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to WGAL.

Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Chief David Steffen told LancasterOnline Wednesday evening that the warehouse’s roof had imploded, creating what would be hours of overhaul work for the firefighters.

LancasterOnline reported the fourth alarm was called at about 7:15 p.m.

About 15 minutes later, Northern Lancaster County Regional police said a large plume of smoke with possibly hazardous flames was forcing a “3-mile exclusion zone” from Lancaster Airport’s control tower. Aircraft were advised to stay away from the area.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear Thursday morning.

The warehouse is an importer and distributor of candies, chocolate, nuts and more from around the world, according to the website.

The company began as a bulk-foods company in a family home in 1975, but expanded over the years, moving to their current location in the late ‘80s.
