A wrecked vehicle auction lot caught fire in northwest Eugene Sunday afternoon, burning 25 cars before crews got it under control.

The fire sent up plumes of black smoke up that could be seen for miles around.

The lot in the 2900 block of East Enid Road caught fire a little after 12:30 p.m. Firefighters initially had difficulty accessing the lot, according to Mike Caven, a spokesman for Eugene Springfield Fire.

There was no clear indication what started the fire, Caven said. He added that Lane Fire Authority was the primary agency handling it.

"It probably will be difficult to ascertain, there wasn't anything obvious," he said. "A lot of times in crashed cars, batteries can touch things they're not supposed to and end up catching on fire."

There were no injuries from the fire.
