Springfield firefighters quickly knocked down a residential fire on the upper floor of a home before it could cause significant damage Friday morning.

SPRINGFIELD, MA - A fire Friday morning caused heavy damage to a home on Hood Street but firefighters knocked down the flames before it could cause significant damage, a fire official said.

No one was injured in the fire at 101 Hood Street, off Bay Street, said Capt. Drew Piemonte, aide to Fire Commissioner Bernard J. Calvi.

Five people were home at the time but got out safely, he said. The Western Massachusetts chapter of the American Red Cross were called to assist the residents, he said.

The fire appeared to have started in the attic area. It was reported just after 8:30 a.m.

Fire damage was limited to the attic area, and firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate smoke. The rest of the 2 1/2 story home sustained smoke and water damage.

The cause is unknown, and investigators with the city Arson and Bomb Squad will try to determine how it started, he said.
