Man Rescued from Roof During New Orleans Blaze

New Orleans firefighters rescued a 20-year-old man from the roof of a residence during a three-alarm fire Friday morning.

Oct. 15—A 20-year-old man was rescued from the roof of a burning building Uptown early Friday, New Orleans firefighters said.

The fire was reported around 6 a.m. at a three-story residential building at 2326 Short Street (map), which is near the intersection of South Claiborne Avenue and South Carrollton Avenue.

Firefighters arrived at the scene 4 minutes after the 911 call and said they saw the man on the roof calling for help as flames began to come through the back of the building. He was rescued, officials said, and taken to a hospital via ambulance to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The other eight residents escaped the building safely, NOFD said.

The fire spread throughout the second and third floors and eventually became a three-alarm fire, NOFD said, which means they requested additional help twice at the scene.

Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring properties, which also had multiple residential units, officials said.

The fire was deemed under control at 7:53 a.m., according to a statement from NOFD. Twenty-one NOFD units carrying 57 NOFD personnel responded. An NOFD member working the scene was taken to a hospital for observation after complaining of chest pains.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, officials said.
