TUPPER LAKE, NY — Two people this weekend were found dead in the debris of a burned out camper at a Tupper Lake campsite, according to the New York State Police.

The pair — tentatively identified as Thomas Smiddy, 53, and Kerry Jacobs, 48 — were found Saturday at Township #19 Camp on Pitchfork Pond Road, police said in a news release Monday. They are both from Fort Covington.

Campers driving past noticed smoke coming from the area, police said. They went to investigate and found a tow-behind camper destroyed by a fire, they said.

Firefighters found the two dead in the camper, police said.

Autopsies are being done on the victims to determine their causes of death, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
