4-Alarm Fire Damages Multiple OR Businesses

Multiple businesses were damaged after a four-alarm fire tore through a downtown Hillsboro block early Sunday morning.

A 4-alarm fire severely damaged several businesses on Hillsboro’s Main Street Sunday morning.

Firefighters responded to what was initially reported as a 3-alarm blaze at East Main Street and Southeast 2nd Avenue just after 3 a.m. Sunday morning. The fire was soon upgraded to a 4-alarm blaze, according to officials.

The fire was concentrated around the Weil Arcade with the blaze causing extensive damage to businesses from 211 to 243 East Main Street, officials said. The fire caused the roof of one building to collapse early Sunday morning, officials said.

Piseth Pich, a Hillsboro Fire spokesperson, said no one appears to have been inside any of the buildings when the fire broke out, and no injuries have been reported.

Firefighters were continuing to work to extinguish hot spots at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The fire occurred one day after 17 people were displaced by a fire at a Hillsboro apartment complex near East Main Street and Southeast 12th Avenue. Investigators said that fire was caused by a baseboard heater igniting combustible materials in a bedroom inside one of the apartment units.

Hillsboro Mayor Steve Callaway on Sunday praised firefighters’ responses to the two fires.

“Our hearts go out to the families and all of the Main Street businesses affected by the fires,” Callaway said. “We and the community are here to support them in their recovery.”
