Strong Winds Fan MI House Fire

Jan. 20, 2022
Heavy winds fanned the flames that destroyed a Monroe Township house requiring three-alarms to extinguish the fire.

Jan. 20—MONROE TOWNSHIP — Six fire departments rushed to the scene of another house fire in Monroe Township, the fourth in the community this month.

No one was injured and the pets apparently escaped the smoke and flames that destroyed the house on Hull Road between Albain Road and Juniper Trail. A family lived at the house and were away when the call came in around 10:35 a.m.

Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mark Cherney said the fire ignited at the roof line toward the rear of the home, in the face of a strong wind. The flames quickly spread.

"It took off from there," Cherney said, adding that the cause of the blaze is unknown at this time.

The fire engulfed the upper floor of the two-story, sided house. The roof eventually caved in. The victims arrived on the scene shortly after firefighters arrived, Cherney said. The family owns several cats, but it is believed they may escaped through a cat door.

Six fire departments assisted at the scene of the three-alarm fire, with more than one department responding with each alarm. Assisting Monroe Township at the scene were firefighters and equipment from the City of Monroe, LaSalle, Ida, Frenchtown and Bedford. Firefighters were on the scene for about five hours.

Wednesday's fire was the fourth house fire this month in Monroe Township. The others were on Plum Creek, Magnolia and E. Sweet Briar, which is off S. Custer Road.
