Feb. 11, 2022
A stubborn fire at a junkyard next to the Plainfield Township firehouse brought firefighters from several communities to the scene.

Firefighters converged Thursday night on a blaze at a scrapyard in northern Northampton County.

It was reported about 6:45 p.m. at JFR Salvage, 6500 Sullivan Trail in Plainfield Township.

That’s right beside the Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Co.’s firehouse. Additional crews were immediately called in from Wind Gap and Monroe County, according to emergency radio broadcasts. Responding crews also included fire departments from Saylorsburg, the Nazareth area and Palmer Township, along with EMS, and township and Northampton County emergency management coordinators.

Reports from the scene indicated flames shot an estimated 100 feet in the air, well above a tree line that surrounds the scrapyard.

There were no reports of injuries, Plainfield’s emergency management coordinator, A.J. Olszewski, told lehighvalleylive.com at the scene shortly before 9 p.m.

The fire was consuming scrap cars and tires, he said.

Toward 9 p.m., firefighters were regrouping and re-evaluating their approach to the stubborn blaze, Olszewski said.

Fire crews tapped hydrants and brought in tankers to use in the effort, as well as foam that could be seen being mixed in barrels near the fire company’s pavilion, the parking lot full of fire apparatus.

Sullivan Trail and Kromer Road were closed to traffic in the area. Winds were from the west around the time of the fire.
