A man was in serious condition after an extra-alarm blaze consumed portions of an apartment building, a restaurant and a “ninja” obstacle course gym on Chicago’s North Side early Monday, fire officials said.
The large 3-alarm fire, first reported before 4 a.m. , was still burning as of 7:40 a.m., a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department said. The blaze required about 150 firefighters and 50 firefighting vehicles, which were called to the 4300 block of North Richmond Street in Albany Park, he said.
A man, estimated to be about 60 years old, was taken to Swedish Hospital in serious condition for smoke inhalation, officials said. No other injuries were reported.
The fire spread across an apartment building of roughly six to nine units and a commercial building containing multiple businesses, the spokesman said. The latter building housed a bar and restaurant called Twisted Hippo and an obstacle course gym called Ultimate Ninjas.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday morning.
