A brush fire broke out in Jurupa Valley on Friday, May 6, prompting the evacuation of about 200 school children from the Jurupa Mountains Discovery Center.

The fire was reported at Granite Hill Drive and Pyrite Avenue around 12:50 p.m., according to Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department. By 1:20 p.m., it had reached 100 acres, with the potential for 500 to 1,000 acres, according to Cal Fire.

The flames were burning eastward at a moderate rate of spread in light brush. Authorities issued evacuation warnings for streets east of the museum that included Soto Avenue, Dell Avenue, Scenic Drive, Gypsum Drive and Boulder Drive.

An evacuation warning means that residents need to be prepared to leave.

Firefighters from the city of Riverside were also on the scene.
