Two FFs Injured at NJ Basement Fire

Two Perth Amboy firefighters were injured battling a basement fire that displaced six people.

A fire at a two-family home in Perth Amboy displaced six people on Saturday afternoon, and two firefighters suffered non-life threatening while battling the blaze, officials said.

The township’s fire department was dispatched around 12:55 p.m. to 189 William St. where heavy smoke was coming from all floors of the two-and-a-half story home, according to the township’s Facebook post.

They found heavy fire in the basement, along with fire extending to the attic through the balloon frame bays. Multiple hose lines were stretched to attack the fire, the post said, while the home’s occupants were safely located without injury.

“Due to the heavy fire conditions, all crews were withdrawn and operations went defensive,” the post said.

Once the fire was knocked down, firefighters entered to put out the remaining hot spots, officials said. Two firefighters suffered non-life threatening injuries, and both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The home is a “total loss” and the neighboring unit, 187 William St., experienced minor damage. The township is investigating the fire.

At least four other township fire departments helped assist on the scene, the post said.
