Smoke in downtown Worcester Thursday afternoon was the result of a multiple car fire in St. Vincent Hospital’s parking garage, according to Acting Deputy Fire Chief Adam Roche.
The Worcester Fire Department received a call around noon that a car was on fire in the garage, Roche said.
When firefighters arrived on the scene there was a lot of smoke coming from the garage, Roche said. The amount of smoke led firefighters to close the Summer Street entrance to prevent people from leaving the safety of the hospital and entering an area with toxic smoke.
Firefighters also asked people that were outside the hospital to go inside.
Three vehicles were involved in the fire. Roche said he expected all three to be a “total loss.”
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 20 minutes.
“Firefighters did a great job at extinguishing the fire quickly under difficult conditions with zero visibility,” Roche said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
