Historic Structure on San Francisco Pier Destroyed

The pier, built in 1925, near Alcatraz was closed to the public.

Aug. 24—A historic building was destroyed Tuesday after a fire broke out on Pier 4, where the building was located.

Fire boats and the San Francisco Fire Department were able to quell the blaze, but the building, which sat at the end of the pier, collapsed.

The pier and the building — part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area — were not in use and closed to the public. They were already deteriorating after the structures were damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the GGNRA wrote on social media.

Pier 4 was constructed by the city of San Francisco in 1925 for the U.S. Army. It served as a dock for the army before it was used by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, which opened the Alcatraz federal penitentiary in 1934.

"Although this structure had very limited historic value, we are sad to see it was destroyed, but relieved that no one was hurt," the GGNRA wrote on social media.

No one was injured in the blaze.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing, according to the fire department.
