A child died after a fire ravaged a home in Lynn early Tuesday morning, fire officials said.

The child has not been identified pending full family notifications and a formal identification process by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, according to a statement from the Lynn Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived after the fire broke out at around 4 a.m., flames engulfing a two-story home located on 7 Circuit Ave. It took 45 minutes before the fire was under control, Boston 25 News reported.

“This morning’s fire remains under investigation, but we want to emphasize how important it is for every household to have working smoke alarms and a practiced home escape plan,” said State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey in a statement. “Please take a minute today to be sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home and test them to be sure they’re working properly.”

A dozen residents were also displaced by the fire and received assistance from the Red Cross of Massachusetts, Salvation Army and Lynn’s city government, according to the statement. The Salem Fire Department provided mutual aid at the scene; the fire departments of Chelsea, Marblehead, Melrose, Peabody, Revere, Salem, and Saugus provided station coverage.

The child remained unaccounted for until late Tuesday morning. They were later located inside the home and pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Lynn Fire Department, Lynn Police Department and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the offices of the State Fire Marshall and Essex District Attorney.
